New Eye Chart to Detect Macular Degeneration

An international team combining scientists from Moorfields Eye Hospital, Ulster University and University College London has produced an Eye Chart which detects the early onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Most sight loss comes in the later stages of the condition, making it relatively easy to diagnose. For the first time, the new ‘Moorfields Acuity Chart’ offers a quick and reliable indication of the early changes in the retina which lead to the condition.

Results of a clinical trial involving 80 patients were recently published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. These results show the new chart to be much more effective than standard eye charts in detecting the condition. Plans are now afoot for a larger clinical trial.
