Light therapy proves effective in early prostate cancer treatment
Coming hard on the tail of the news that photoimmunotherapy (PIT) may represent an option for those with head and neck cancer (see our recent blog click here ), trial results have now been published which suggest that light therapy may also provide an option for those suffering from low risk prostate cancer.
Vascular-Targeted Photodynamic Therapy (VTP) was shown to offer complete remission to almost half of a group of 400 men with localized prostate cancer in phase III clinical trials reported in The Lancet Oncology.
Professor Mark Emberton, Dean of Medical Sciences and a Consultant Urologist at University College London says:
"This is truly a huge leap forward for prostate cancer treatment, which has previously lagged decades behind other solid cancers such as breast cancer. These results are excellent news for men with early localized prostate cancer, offering a treatment that can kill cancer without removing or destroying the prostate."
